Surrender your sons adam sass5/28/2023 This is a fast-paced book with a compelling protagonist that isn’t an easy read, but is a story we don’t often see represented, especially in YA literature. The teens start to formulate a plan to save themselves after the adults in their lives have betrayed and failed them. Once at the “camp,” Conor quickly begins to piece together what has happened in collaboration with other teens who have been sent away from their own families. Connor, along with other teens, are transported to a conversion therapy camp in Costa Rica.Īs far-fetched as this might sound to some readers, conversion therapy and “therapeutic” boarding schools and bootcamps are both in the United States and abroad (where they are often even less regulated) are a common practice for controlling teens. First she takes his phone - cutting him off from contact with his boyfriend - and then she has him kidnapped from his bed in the middle of the night. After his boyfriend convinces him coming out to his mother will be safe, Connor’s mom’s reaction is anything but accepting. Adam Sass’ powerful new novel “Surrender Your Sons” centers the damaging practice of conversion therapy through the story of Conor, a gay teenager in Illinois.

Highest Bidder by Sara Cate5/26/2023 I am not a fan of her male voice when she is speaking as Ronan, it’s not terrible but I’m not a fan. She did a great job of making the FMC Daisy sound young and very unsure of herself. The female narrator I have listened to before in a few Katee Robert audiobooks and overall I like her voice and her style. Hints are dropped for the next book and I am more excited for that one. This book definitely felt like it lacked the depth the other books in the series have, but again I did still enjoy it and I love this kink so that helped. The FMC was a bit whiny and annoying, but that could be attributed to her age (God I hope I wasn’t that annoying at 21). I would have liked to read about some challenges or obstacles they faced regarding it, aside from their own internal turmoil over it. The age gap between the characters is pretty substantial 30+ years. I am a fan of the slow burn and you don’t get that in this story. The spice was □□□ chefs good (as we knew it would be based off other books in the series). The most recent addition to the Salacious Players Club series was everything I expected from Sara Cate plus some. Monsters ilsa j bick5/26/2023 It’s recovered through well-crafted sentences, especially Bick’s signature, deliberate cliffhanger chapter endings that ensure that readers won’t be able to stop until they’ve reached the climactic showdown. There are so many near brushes with death that, at times, danger becomes tedious and expected, losing some tension. The jarring narration jumps back and forth between Alex’s story and the other characters’, often in short bursts with deadly-peril parallels in characters’ situations. Meanwhile, other familiar faces reappear, each belonging to one of various other small groups scrapping for survival. Rescued from a cave-in by Wolf, she rejoins the Changed, despite the risk of ending up on the menu, and gradually learns Wolf’s and Peter’s secrets. Picking up immediately where Shadows (2012) left off, indomitable heroine Alex again claws her way out of one danger and into another. All of the Ashes Trilogy storylines converge in this action-packed series conclusion. |
